Sushi Naritaya in Kyoto

Hands on the BEST SUSHI we have had in Japan (& it’s our third cities). Simple place and simply delicious!! Portions are generous and prices super reasonable. Most unique are their maki rolls which you can’t always find in Japan. Staff is super nice and smiley. Will come here again during my trip!!!

Excellent meal and great hospitality here. From someone with limited experience to anything resembling good sashimi, the sashimi was amazingly fresh and melted in our mouths immediately. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, we were wondering on the side what type of fish we were having and the staff went to the translator to try and get us an answer. A little gem of a restaurant and would recommend.

Amazing thicc fatty tuna and fresh eel, you can taste the freshness. The steamed scallops salad was huge and delicious. Also, very affordable and accepts card. And at the end they gave us these free sushi magnets too!

The restaurant has limited seating capacity so we have to wait 30 minutes. Fatty tuna sashimi is strongly recommended. Price is reasonable to foods' quality

Best sushi we ever tried, and we have been in a lot of sushi restaurants all around the world! If you visit Arashiyama, you have to go this place. Amazing food and owner and his team are very very kind :-)

Found this restaurant with a high review in TripAdvisor (most are 5 star) and found that it was a nice sushi bar with 6 tables. There are English menu and the staff can speak English a little bit. Sushi are nice at average quality.

What a gem. Comfortable and tucked away along the main strip the sushi is delicious. Musashi is phenomenal and very personable with customers. The service is excellent. Everything is made to order and as a result the sushi and sashimi and very fresh and flavorful. The salmon, unagi were our favorite. I would definetley come back here again. I highly recommend.

Love the sashimi here! So fresh and amazing! It’s definitely worth the wait. It’s a tiny place and we came around 1pm and there’s no line... lucky us! Friendly staff and chef! 🤗 will definitely come again the next time!

We ordered smoked and fresh salmon. so fresh and thick salmon. Yummy....price is reasonable too. Friendly and warm staff. Free flow green tea. Highly recommended !!

MOST DELICIOUS SUSHI we have ever tasted!!! The fish really does melt in your mouth and the proportions are perfect. Fantastic prices, you almost feel as if you are stealing from them it's so good. Each piece is made fresh to order and you can taste the quality! Cannot recommend this place more, the chef and his daughter are so lovely and friendly - no problems with English either. We went at about 2:30pm and the place was lovely and quiet, tucked away behind Lawson's in a nice little courtyard, you must try this sushi! ✨✨✨

Amazing quality sushi at a good price. No frills here but great service and great fish. Free green tea! Good deal on sake as well. Definitely recommend I'm glad I came to try!

Fantastic sushi near the monkey park and the bamboo forest. It can be hard to find, but if you take the little path on the left side of the police station, you’ll end up right by the restaurant. The quality is great for the price! Highly recommend the fatty tuna and uni nigiri.

Great sushi place. The Place is value for money. Should come earlier to get a seat as it can get crowded during lunch and the premium pieces will get sold out pretty soon.

The store staff was super friendly and we got sashimi and a chirashi. They were so friendly and even gave our kid a shrimp sushi fridge magnet. Highly recommended for families.

The restaurant is definitely a 'must go' if you are around the area! The staff and the chef made my family feel very (VERY) welcomed, and it was the best service we had in Japan so far. We didn't have any troubles in communicating with them in English and they also had English menus.As for the food, everything was very fresh. Being someone who appreciates good Japanese food, it is a place I would certainly go again. The toro (tuna belly) is definitely a must. Tea (green and oolong) and water are free.

Delicious range of nigiris! The pieces are nice and fatty. Loving the fatty tuna... it just melts in your mouth! Also the staff and chefs are super friendly! Definitely recommend!

Food was fantastic! Very fresh. Pieces were good size. They were great with my daughter so that was a plus. The server was able to communicate in English. Hidden on the back side through a side of a ice cream shop. Would come this way again if I come back for the hike to the monkey park again. Thanks again!!

What an amazing place. Fish melts in your mouth. But not only that, the staff is incredibly kind! My mom spilled on herself and they gifted her a new shirt. Can’t thank Naritaya enough :) 6 stars!!

Amazing sushi and Maki! Good sized pieces. Cozy with welcoming chef and waitress. Both speak enough English if you speak no Japanese. Well worth the wait and clearly 5.0/5.0 for a reason! Don't miss it.

Fantastic little spot off the main road, slightly away from masses of tourists. It's a small restaurant with a few seats and there was a queue when we arrived but it moved very quickly. We had the salmon, tuna and medium fatty tuna, all nigiri. They were all very fresh and tasty. The price is a bit on the higher side than the chain restaurants, but worth it in my opinion! I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area and I would also go back!

5 star service deserves a 5 star review! A small little sushi bar that fits 6 tables. Sake and sushi - a heavenly combination. Quality of sushi is impeccable. Must try if you are ever in Kyoto!

A little hard to find but an excellent place to try! Servings are delicious but a little small. The service is fantastic!! I came with two young ones and the owner gave us a small magnetic shrimp for our fridge at home, nice keepsake!! Please find this spot with the best friendly service.

This place served one of the best sushi I've ever had. The steamed/grilled scooped dish was also amazing. It's a bit of a hidden gem as it wasn't packed when we came here for dinner at 4:30pm. The staff are super friendly and again, the food was so so fresh and delicious. Who would have known sushi can be this good. Definitely highly recommended. Free WiFi and green tea available too.

Sushi bar Naritaya is incredible. It’s very small with what I’d estimate to be 16 seats, so get there early. The staff as you’d imagine in Japan is excellent. The sushi chef is the man. The sushi itself is incredible. The prices are super reasonable.

We have never had such delicious, melt-in-your-mouth sushi! The fish are so fresh and flavorful. Beautiful plating and presentation. The atmosphere is relaxing and peaceful. Savored every single bite. HIGHLY recommend Sushi Bar Naritaya!!!

Really hidden, so make sure you check behind the Lawson’s. The eel and fatty tuna was delicious. I found the pricing a bit on the high side for the amount and quality of fish that was served. The staff was very friendly and nice.

Baffled as to why this place has such high reviews. I would definitely say this is a tourist trap. 3000 yen for 8 pieces of sushi, mediocre quality at best. Honestly for it's quality I would probably rate it 2 stars, but the high rating really needs to be balanced out.

Amazing amazing sushi! Not sure if it's my taste palate that differs from others but having tried a dozen of sushi places with >4.5 stars rating, this is probably the best sushi place during my one-month trip in Japan. Unlike other places, the sushi selection here is somewhat limited, but they serve some of the best unagi, anago, salmon, scallop and tuna sushi here. I am a big fan of eel and the anago (salt water eel) and unagi (fresh water eel) sushi here were the best that I ever had. The place is run by 4 extremely friendly staffs who can speak basic English so communication is not an issue. In my opinion, this place is worth a special trip down even if you are not visiting the Arashiyama area.

Fantastic sushi, with a warm and attentive staff. The fatty tuna was some of the best I've ever had. Prices are reasonable, and the service is quick. If you are having trouble finding the restaurant, it's around the corner with a collection of small boutiques off a side street.

This sushi bar is a tucked away gem. The sushi chef puts a lot of effort to make your sushi a work of art each time. Everything came out fresh and quick! The chef even came out to take a picture with us. Best Sushi experience I have ever had.

My wife and I stumbled across this place after we tried to evade the overly crowded Bamboo Forest. Amongst the typical touristy shops and restaurants hides this hole in the wall, unassuming location to whom we found out after the fact, is one of the best places to get sushi not only in Kyoto, but in Japan. The staff was INCREDIBLY friendly. They were eager to assist as we attempted to order in our very broken Japanese. The sushi (as seen below) was incredible. Everything was shockingly fresh and artistically presentable. The Fatty Tuna (or Toro) was the highlight. Not only was it very affordable but it was so fresh, it almost felt like it melted in your mouth. In fact, while I was having a great conversation with my fellow patrons who lived in Kyoto, my wife sneakingly ordered herself another helping of Toro, all for herself. This corner of Kyoto gets over crowded and way touristy for the most part, but THIS is a hidden gem that makes it worthwhile. HIGHLY recommend!!
